Speak up for Homeless Rights!

Categories // News, Events

City Council Meeting Tuesday June 19th at 7pm

Come to the City Council Meeting on Tuesday evening at 7pm at City Hall, 990 Palm Street.

Wouldn't it be great if SLO could pass a Homeless Bill of Rights here too?

The following is from http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/15/rhode-island-homeless-bill-of-rights_n_1595063.html?utm_hp_ref=impact

Rhode Island Passes 'Homeless Bill Of Rights'

(Reuters) - Rhode Island's governor is expected to sign into law the first "Homeless Bill of Rights" in the United States as early as next week, formally banning discrimination against homeless people and affirming their equal access to jobs, housing and services.

The legislation, which won final approval by the state Senate on Wednesday, bucks a national trend among municipalities toward outlawing behaviors associated with homelessness such as eating, sleeping and panhandling in public spaces.

Among other steps, the Rhode Island law would guarantee homeless people the right to use public sidewalks, parks and transportation as well as public buildings, like anyone else "without discrimination on the basis of his or her housing status."

It guarantees a "reasonable expectation of privacy" with respect to personal belongings similar to that of people who have homes.

While other laws already guarantee many of the rights specified in this legislation, supporters say it was necessary due to widespread discrimination.

"I think we've set the bar high in the U.S. for homeless people, and I'm very proud of that," said Senator John Tassoni, a sponsor of the bill.

Rhode Island is the smallest of the 50 U.S. states.

Choose nonviolence -- it works best

Nonviolence Is The Right Choice — It Works

From http://www.greenchange.org/article.php?id=3576:

Nonviolent resistance is not only the morally superior choice. It is also twice as effective as the violent variety.

That’s the startling and reassuring discovery by Maria Stephan and Erica Chenoweth, who analyzed an astonishing 323 resistance campaigns from 1900 to 2006.

“Our findings show that major nonviolent campaigns have achieved success 53 percent of the time, compared with 26 percent for violent resistance campaigns,” the authors note in the journal International Security. (The study is available as a PDF file at http://www.nonviolent-conflict.org)

The result is not that surprising, once you listen to the researchers’ reasoning.

“First, a campaign’s commitment to nonviolent methods enhances its domestic and international legitimacy and encourages more broad-based participation in the resistance, which translates into increased pressure being brought to bear on the target,” they state. “Second, whereas governments easily justify violent counterattacks against armed insurgents, regime violence against nonviolent movements is more likely to backfire against the regime.”

In an interesting aside that has relevance for our times, the authors also write that, “Our study does not explicitly compare terrorism to nonviolent resistance, but our argument sheds light on why terrorism has been so unsuccessful.”

To their credit, the authors don’t gloss over nonviolent campaigns that haven’t been successes. They give a clear-eyed assessment of the failure so far of the nonviolent movement in Burma, one of the three detailed case studies in the piece, along with East Timor and the Philippines.

In some sense, the authors have subjected to statistical analysis the notions of Gene Sharp, an influential Boston-based proponent of nonviolent change, someone they cite frequently in the footnotes. In his work, Sharp stresses the practical utility of nonviolence, de-emphasizing the moral aspects of it. He even asserts that for Gandhi, nonviolence was more of a pragmatic tool than a matter of principle, painting a picture that’s at variance with much of Gandhian scholarship. In an interview with me in 2006, Sharp declared that he derives his precepts from Gandhi himself.

Gandhi’s use of nonviolence “was pure pragmatism,” Sharp told me. “At the end of his life, he defends himself. He was accused of holding on to nonviolent means because of his religious belief. He says no. He says, I presented this as a political means of action, and that’s what I’m saying today. And it’s a misrepresentation to say that I presented this as a purely religious approach. He was very upset about that.”

One of the authors of the study, Maria Stephan, is at the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict. The group’s founders wrote a related book a few years ago, “A Force More Powerful: A Century of Nonviolent Conflict.” Erica Chenoweth is at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

This study is manna for those of us who believe in nonviolent resistance as a method of social change. We don’t have to justify it on moral grounds any more. The reason is even simpler now: Nonviolence is much more successful.

Stop the Trans-Pacific Partnership

NO to TPP “Free Trade”

via http://stoptpp.org/

We are waking up. The fog is lifting. We are sweeping away the lies and secrecy.

From July 2 to July 10, the political leaders of the Pacific Rim nations are meeting in San Diego to turn the Pacific Ocean and its peoples into a giant privatized corporate lake characterized by non-union workers, Wal-Mart supply chain feeders, poisoned, landless agricultural laborers, a dying biodiversity, and rising, drowning sea levels. We cannot and will not let this happen.

The TPP meeting is officially referred to as the 13th Round of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Talks. The nations involved are the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, Chile, and Peru. Japan, Mexico and Canada have indicated a desire to join. The economic power of this group is more than 40% larger than the 27-nation European Union. The claimed purpose of TPP is to promote development and create jobs.

The General Assemblies of Occupy San Diego and Occupy City Heights hereby invites our communities, our regional neighbors, and our co-inhabitants of Earth, in general, to join us in both protesting the TPP and also in creating a new world.

We will march with pots and pans, and drums to kick off an international week-long conference and roundtables on what is wrong with the TPP Pact and what are the people’s alternatives.

See http://stoptpp.org/ for more information

The Facts (http://stoptpp.org/thefacts/)

What is TPP?

The Trans Pacific Partnership would create a super-treaty which would jeopardize the sovereignty of the nations involved by giving that power to large corporations like Wal Mart, Warners, Sony, BP, JP Morgan, AIG, Veoilia, and Monsanto.

  • There are currently 9 nations involved: US, New Zealand, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. Japan, Canada and Mexico have shown interest.
  • The economic power of this group is more than 40% larger than the 27- nation European Union.
  • The TPP would offshore millions of good-paying jobs to low-wage nations and under-cut working conditions globally increasing unemployment and union labors.
  • Allow foreign firms the ability to acquire land, natural resources, and factories without government reviews
  • USTR (US Trade Representatives) are pushing for TPP countries to expand pharmaceutical monopoly protections and institute longer patents that will decrease access to affordable medications
  • The U.S. would agree to waive Buy America procurement policies for all of the firms operating in the TPP countries
  • Limit food GMO labeling and allow the import of goods that do not meet US safe standards.
  • Excessive copyright rights and enforcement which would affect the ability of creators to create content, stifle innovative technological products, and that ability of users to use content in new ways.
  • Would institute CISPA like regulations and “3 strikes” internet measures kicking people off the internet after committing three infringement violations.
  • It would roll back Wall Street, and prohibit ban on risky financial services.

Occupy SLO submits complaint to The City of Chicago Independent Police Review Authority

For Extreme Violence and Abuse of Authority During the NATO protests

During the 11 days of the NATO summit in Chicago from May 12th – May 23rd, there were massive multi-day protests against NATO and the war machine. Many protestors and media personnel were severely beaten, run over by police vehicles, falsely arrested, exposed to intimidation tactics or otherwise harassed by the Chicago police force. Following the protests, several mainstream media outlets reported that the police handled it peacefully and that the entire police force would receive free White Sox tickets for “a job well done at the NATO summit.”1

In response to the horrendous treatment of protestors and media personnel and blatant misrepresentation of reality in mainstream media, Occupy SLO members submitted the following letter:

To whom it may concern:

We, the undersigned, demand a full investigation into the Chicago Police Department’s handling of protestors and media members during the NATO Summit protests in Chicago from May 12th - 23rd, 2012. The City of Chicago Independent Police Review Authority shall hold officers, supervisory staff and decision makers accountable for extreme police brutality and abuse of authority.

The whole world watched as people participated in eleven days of protests, rallies and demonstrations against the NATO summits. The whole world saw police using excessive force against peaceful protestors. The whole world saw police punching, pushing, beating with clubs and running into protestors with their vehicles. And the whole world saw the results of this unnecessary force: individuals with bloody heads or missing teeth and people screaming for help, only to have would-be rescuers beaten down as they came to their aid. We saw individuals assaulted for no reason and we demand justice.

In addition to the violence against protestors, there were multiple incidents of police using their authority to intimidate members of the media. On the evening of May 19th, police targeted one group of livestreamers by handcuffing and holding them at gunpoint while searching their vehicle. After the search, police informed them that they were looking for a similar vehicle, despite the fact that theirs had New Mexico license plates; an unlikely coincidence. Police also singled out other media members and arrested them during the protests in an attempt to intimidate them and hide their valuable videos, audio and images from the world.

We demand a full investigation into and prosecution of officers, supervisory staff and decision makers for violence against protestors and abuse of authority.

Sincerely,

Occupy SLO and friends

Yo Soy 132

Mexican Spring

About 90,000 students and supporters in Mexico rallied against the leading candidate, Enrique Peña Nieto, who had in the past paid for positive TV coverage.

"For marchers like José Eduardo Saragoza, this type of collusion emblemizes the corruption built into the PRI [Institutional Revolutionary Party].

“We don’t want a candidate created by the TV stations,” says Saragoza. “We want a real democracy, one where the media itself is democratic, and tells the truth.”

"Opposition to Peña Nieto’s campaign has inspired a student protest movement that some have dubbed “the Mexican Spring.” It’s called “Yo Soy 132” or “I am 132.”

"The movement was named that to express support for 131 university students who were vilified for speaking out against the leading candidate (Nieto)."

Despite the coverage of the campaign itself, there are reports of a media blackout on the protests.

Emergency Call for Support from the Riverdale Mobile Home Encampment

Categories // News, Help Out

In Riverdale, Pennsylvania

The following was written June 11. For more: SaveRiverdale.com

This morning, we were informed by a utility worker that construction crews affiliated with Aqua America are planning to begin excavation on the land of the Riverdale mobile home community tomorrow (Tuesday).

We have successfully delayed construction of a massive water withdrawal facility, permitted to suck up to 3 millions gallons of water daily from the Susquehanna River for use in fracking operations, for over 10 days now. The encampment is in urgent need of support at this time! Now is the time to show your conviction and solidarity with these brave residents and volunteers who have decided to stand their ground in the face of ruthless corporate giant - Aqua America.

Ways to Support:

COME TO RIVERDALE: If you live within a few hours of Riverdale, now is the time to drop everything and support a community in dire need. The families that have stood their ground face imminent homelessness upon their removal. Call in sick to work, or take a vacation day - do it for the Riverdale residents.

DONATE: It has cost hundreds of dollars to feed and house the dozens of people who have come to support the residents of Riverdale. Money will be needed to support residents who face homelessness, and bail will need to be posted ASAP for those brave supporters who are holding the barricade.

Call or Email those responsible for fracking and the construction of this (and all) water withdrawal facilities.

CONTACT your friends, neighbors, allies, churches, and other networks that you may belong to. Ask them to spread the word, donate, write letters to the editor of their local newspaper.

This fight can still be won, but only with immediate action from people like you!
